Sony enters the market for HD Telepresence Systems in the UK with a 3D high-definition Telepresence solution offering unparalleled realism; this is in partnership with Teleportel and Imago

September 13, 2007 | Chris Payatagool

10 September 2007. Sony and Videoconferencing Distributor Imago and Teleportel have announced the launch of their 3D Telepresence solution for the UK market. The price of around 30,000 (UK) for a one-HD- screen system is less expensive than that of most competitors and you get Sony guaranteed quality as well.

Sony is the first vendor to offer a 3D (three-dimensional) solution but the technology behind this is not explained. Teleportel's technology comes from TelePresence Tech (Duffie White), and is described in this way on the Teleportel web site: "You will appear in the room life-size, live, within an apparent 3D-environment as if you are actually in there and have eye-to-eye contact with those present." So, as is always the case in assessing video quality, "seeing is believing". This Sony offering will be worth a close look ... the more so when Sony Telepresence room configurations become available in the Fall. (The picture is as shown on the Telportel and Imago web sites but may not be the same as the current offering.)

Sony's LCD screens and HD Video Communication PCS-HG90 system, which facilitates high-definition 3D image projection, is opening new possibilities for Telepresence meetings. This Sony -based, industry-leading technology has been developed by the U.S.-based TelePresenceTech and Belgium-based Teleportel for the European market.

Sony's PCS-HG90 is considered the videoconferencing codec of choice by developers. The developers tapped into Sony's vast resources in image sensing and display, along with processing and digital compression for premier video conferencing. The Sony HD Video Communication system's built in MCU provides true High-Definition, two-way communication in real-time between up to four sites. The PCS-HG90 supports H.264 HD over standard IP networks up to 8 Mbps to deliver HD video 1280 x 720 resolution at 30P and 60P. The system offers superb wideband stereo sound and remarkable HD video quality.

Fumihiko Kawamura, Video Conferencing Product Manager at Sony UK , commented:
"The video conferencing industry has been primarily limited to the 2D space and hasn't offered users the 3D experience nor genuine eye-contact with one another. Teleportel'' 3D TelePresence Tech. enables participants to look directly into the eyes of the person they are conversing with - giving a critical sense of connection - and in combination with the life-sized 3D images of the participants, a true sense of presence is established. Sony is very excited about this collaboration with Imago and Teleportel which is bringing a richer and more interactive video conferencing experience thanks to this unique 3D solution. Sony's codec is enabling us to deliver 3D at an audio and visual level on par with broadcasting standards."

Teleportel spokesperson Luc De Backer said: "Through our partnership with Sony, we were able to create a more affordable technology. Sony's superior codec capabilities and significant market presence has enabled us to deliver a powerful and accessible communications tool."

There is currently one roll-about model available: a 50 inch system featuring the Sony FWD50PX2B; the HD ready 1366 x 768, high-contrast plasma screen - with prices around the 30,000 (UK) mark.

Compared to competitor's systems which can cost up to six figures, the launch of the new system will make 3D telepresence available to a much wider market. New, innovative and advanced 'room-system' configurations, featuring the PCS-HG90 - specifically designed for the high end of the 'telepresence market' - will be announced in the Fall.

Dave Cheesman, Strategic Account Manager, Sony UK , said: "With this technology we will be targeting a variety of vertical markets. The enriched video conferencing system brings people closer together than ever before to open up communication across geographical barriers. Professionals from a range of industries, including the recruitment sector and retail banking are already showing a keen interest."
