Omni-directional treadmill could put you in the game

August 20, 2007 | Chris Payatagool

Virtual Space Devices, Inc. has developed omni-directional treadmill (ODT) technology over the last 10 years, working primarily with the US Army. Combining the infinite plane of the ODT with an immersive virtual reality system permits an immersant to walk or run freely through the digital landscape. Navigation is transparent and natural. Immersion is total.

The ODT surface is flat and continuous. It is not a bowl or made of discrete plates. The infinite surface is motion-slaved to the user's motion with tight control and no inertial residue. Belts that comprise the surface are substantially similar to those used in conventional treadmills.

A third-generation, fully integrated, ODT-based simulator is called the "iPlaneTM". It is a gaming and internet communication appliance, addressing numerous high-growth markets. The iPlaneTM is a disruptive technology that will change the way we interact both as individuals and as groups. This physical interface is the final link in the convergence of fast computers, low cost graphics, and broadband infrastructure. It is the literal next-step in the evolution of human-computer interfaces. It is the step that takes us fully into cyberspace.

Past

First work on omni-directional treadmill (ODT) technology began with a $400K US Army STRICOM contract in 1996. The first unit was brought to life in a commercial garage in Bloomington, MN. It was integrated with visuals and sound in an old aeronautical research shed just off the Naval Postgraduate School golf course. We walked freely in cyberspace for the first time on September 15, 1996, using a database of the Ft. Benning, GA, McKenna MOUT site.

After much travel, ODT #1 found a home at the Army Research Lab in Maryland. Over the course of several years, the ARL HRED group lead it through its paces. After 10 years, the unit is still operational.

Present

VSD teamed with MTS Systems Corporation of Eden Prairie, MN, to secure an $8M US Army contract for second generation ODT development. This time we worked directly with ARL. Second-generation technology is larger, faster, and quieter. We are building multiple units, to be installed at both ARL and at the battle lab at Ft. Benning, GA.

For those who are interested in seeing these cutting-edge, immersive navigation devices in action, contact VSD. We'll connect you with the right people at ARL or Ft. Benning so that you can evaluate them.

Future

It is the ultimate entertainment device. Imagine a multi-player internet game where you control your actions not with your fingers but with your entire body, walking or running in any direction in a realistic manner. Now imagine being able to fly or leap tall buildings in a single bound.

It is the ultimate training device. Imagine allowing firefighters, police, soldiers and construction workers the opportunity to physically train in a realistic environment without the danger of injury or death.

It is the ultimate exercise experience. Imagine taking a run on the Great Wall of China today and tomorrow a jog through the streets of Rome.

It is the ultimate travel device. Imagine traveling to the moon, the middle of the jungle in South Africa or taking a tour of the Pyramids of Egypt.

It is the ultimate time travel machine. Imagine spending a day experiencing ancient Athens as the Acropolis was being constructed or the devastation of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

It is the ultimate education device. Imagine having the ability to bring people together that would otherwise be financially impossible. Instead of reading about the culture and people of Madagascar, your local 7th grade class could spend a day in a village in Madagascar experiencing life as the native people do. Then imagine the people of Madagascar having the same opportunity to spend a day in your city or town.

It is the ultimate design tool. Imagine the benefits of being able to walk through a building before a single brick has been laid.
